Growth: Natural shape is a large vertical oval, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub. Rapidly growing (a meter+ or several feet per year) the Flame willow becomes a brilliant torch in the landscape with orange-red stems and bright chartreuse green foliage in the spring. Severe late winter pruning (coppicing) stimulates the stunning spring colour. This pruning also helps to maintain density. Foliage turns bright yellows in the fall before falling to create a mulch that shelters desirable insects overwinter.
Light: Best in full sun
Water: Happiest in wet soils but tolerates some dry spells
Soil: Tolerates variable soil, including heavy clay
Garden location: Good for privacy screens, large garden backdrops, or erosion control in damp areas and wonderful for winter interest focal point. Really brightens the spring landscape.
