Sium sisarum (Skirret)
Skirret is a rather sweet root vegetable much favoured by the Romans and later western Europeans. It's popularity was eclipsed by the introduction of potatoes in the 1600s. Skirret (also known as sugarroot) is once more sought after as an excellent permaculture plant. The finger-like roots are easily harvested by digging up the plant clump, removing the long roots, and replanting the clump to regrow. It requires no maintenance other than preventing weeds from invading the clumps and seems to have no pest problems
