Maple-Japanese (Acer palmatum)
May be grown in full sun, but is typically an understory tree [grows well beneath taller, larger trees]. Soils need to be kept consistently moist (mulching keeps roots cool and conserves soil moisture). Plant where protected from strong wind. Avoid hot, dry sites. Fertilize in spring before leaves emerge, or when dormant. Pruning should only be done in late fall to mid winter, when tree is dormant. Spring or summer pruning usually results in bleeding, and besides weakening the tree while in growth, can let in disease.
