PLANT PROFILE:

Zone: 7-10  Grow as Annual

Height & Spread: 60–90cm [2-3ft]

Growth:  Bushy, clump habit, exuberant

Flower:  5cm [2in] long coral trumpets in clusters at leaf nodes; large, black, barrel-like seeds form as flowers finish and can resow for next season

Foliage:  Medium-green smooth spade-shaped leaves 

Environment:  Average to rich garden soil with sharp drainage; full sun

Garden locations:  Mid-zone of mixed beds; good large annual filler

  • Especially floriferous and fragrant in late afternoon in Peru, where they are native.  But here they are confused and bloom anytime when the sun is on the plants.  All parts are poisonous, so use caution when planting.
