Cardiocrinum giganteum (Giant Himalayan lily)
Cardiocrinum giganteum is a stunning lily, growing from a large bulb to a prominent stem (120-240cm, or 4-8ft. tall) that produces a dramatic finial bud. Over a few weeks the bud opens into a column of white lily flowers marked with marroon. The glossy basal leaves are also handsome. The plant dies to the ground in our climate (Zone 6a), leaving the stem with toothy seed pods. This lily prefers some shade and rich, well-draining soil with some protection.
Cardiocrinum giganteum
Ht.200-300cm. Z5. From large bulbs. White trumpet shaped flowers, 15-20cm long with red throat are held in clusters of 10-20 atop giant leafy stems. Leaves are large, to 40cm long. The bulbs are monocarpic, they die after blooming but leave behind numerous bulblets which will bloom in 3-4 years. This spectacular flowering bulb is best in shade to part sun.
