Allium porrum 'Giant Musselburgh' (Leek, winter)
We grow the 'Giant Musselburgh' leek for eating all winter long. Seedling leeks are transplanted into trenches and soil gradually hilled up around the stalks. Although our winters can get quite cold, deep straw mulch prevents the ground from freezing really hard and a transplant shovel can lift the leeks. This is a Scottih heritage breed - thick and of a wonderful mild flavour - perfect for hearty Potato leek soup.
