PLANT PROFILE:
Zone: Annual here (perennial in zones 10-11)
Height: 30-60cm [1-2 ft]
Spread: 30-40cm [12-15 in]
Growth: Erect, multibranching form with square stems (mint family)
Flower: Very small, white to light pink-lavender flowers, along vertical spikes at ends of branches
Foliage: Rather coarse and rugose, light to medium yellow-green (stem and vein colour may become dark brown-red and hairy with age); ovate with serrated edges, arranged in pairs opposite to each other on square stems which, with age, become woody at the base.
Environment: Well-drained average soil in a warm, sunny site
Garden locations: Holy basil is very aromatic and can be incorporated in mid-front of beds, grown in production gardens (harvest leaves for tea and for culinary use - it has a peppery flavour), or placed in a meditative arrangment to create a calm and spiritually stimulating atmosphere.
