Zone: 6a-7 Perennial (short-lived?) Protect in winter with spruce boughs and hope for deep snow!

Growth:  150cm [5ft] tall x 50cm [20in] wide

Foliage:  Herbaceous; dark green; forms rosette first year, which remains over winter (good to protect with conifer boughs)

Flower:  Large, flared open bells lavender-blue; tall flowering stems may require staking

Light:  Part sun to part shade; prefers early morning sun and dappled shade in hotter part of the day, so eastern exposure is good.

Moisture: Average; best at ground level (overhead watering can cause fungal problems).

Soil:  Average, rocky or gritty, well drained

Garden location:  Back of border; edges of woodlands
